ABOUT ANCHOR POINT

line

THE ANCHOR POINT STORY

The last remnants of a radio transmitter which could have been of great strategic importance to the Germans during the First World War.

These anchor points, beautifully designed and constructed, held the guy ropes for an 86 meter high radio aerial. With the transmitters in Lüderitzbucht and Windhoek, this transmitter formed a link in a radio network which included Berlin. Building commenced in 1911 and the transmitter was commissioned in January 1912.

When war broke out in 1914 and Union troops invaded South West Africa, the Germans feared that the transmitter would fall into enemy hands and used against them. The transmitter and mast were thus demolished. This did not stop the “Armadale Castle”, a British warship, from shelling the area on the 14th September 1914, with little or no further damage being done. One of the shells went through a wooden house and in a chicken run.

RESTAURANT & BAR “ANCHOR POINT”

On the ground floor you will find our in-house restaurant “Anchor Point”. We are open 365 days and serves among breakfast delicious meals and selected wines. The sundowner deck is an insider tip in Swakopmund.

We are very often asked, why the restaurant is called “Anchor Point”! No, it has nothing to do with a ship anchor. It is because of the historic antenna anchor points in front of our restaurant. By the way: Beach Hotel Swakopmund take care of the last existing historic anchor points in Swakopmund. The renovation and maintenance are fully financed by Beach Hotel Swakopmund!

To-date there is a large colony of Cape Fur Seals which can be viewed at close quarters and is an experience of a lifetime. Since the introduction of legislation controlling the utilization of seals in Namibia in 1922, the seal population at Cape Cross has increased to more than 250,000.

Our return journey to Swakopmund includes a short sightseeing tour of the small holiday resort Henties Bay. Henties Bay developed from a mere sprinkling of fisher huts into a very popular holiday resort within a few decades.

Activity Option 1: Historical Swakopmund (1.5 h tour)

Swakopmund, known as the prime holiday resort of Namibia, was founded in August 1892 by the German Colonial Reich. For many years this town was the main harbour for the territory, being served by the mole and later the jetty. Both these structures still exist. Many historical buildings dating from that area are still being used and are rated as historic monuments. The distinct German Colonial character of Swakopmund has been well preserved and is undoubtedly a key attraction for tourists and entrepreneurs.

The tour of Historical Swakopmund concentrates on the historical part of Swakopmund. Your guide will relate the history of Swakopmund and explain the origin of the various historical buildings in town. However, the tour is not confined to the historical centre, but also includes “millionaire’s mile”, the northern suburbs and the townships.

Activity Option 2: Walvis Bay and Wetlands (2.0 h tour)

We travel to Walvis Bay and visit the Walvis Bay Lagoon, a Ramsar Site, and one of the richest and most important coastal wetlands in southern Africa. Up to 160,000 birds are counted in our summer months, including thousands of Greater and Lesser Flamingos, Damara Terns, Curlew Sandpipers, Chestnut-banded Plovers and numerous other shores- and seabirds. After a tour of the Walvis Bay town -and harbour area we head back for Swakopmund, paying a short visit to Bird Island en route.

Activity Option 3: Swakopmund + Walvis Bay (3.0 h tour)

This is a combination of the Swakopmund and Walvis Bay tours.
